What should you note when importing a veteran / classic vehicle?

Last verified: 2026-06-20

When importing an old vehicle, the ordinary import rules apply first: customs clearance with automobile tax (4%) and VAT (8.1%), duty-free for EU origin. “Veteran status” is not an import category, but an entry granted only after import, at the cantonal vehicle inspection (precondition: first entry into circulation at least 30 years ago).

Whether a historic vehicle can be classified as a collector’s item under customs law (with possibly different treatment) depends on the individual case and must be clarified in advance with the BAZG. There are no blanket tax exemptions based on age alone.

Important: customs clearance on import and veteran status are two separate procedures. The six-month removal-goods rule mentioned here can also apply to older vehicles if the conditions are met.
