What does the 30-year rule for veteran vehicles say?
Last verified: 2026-06-20
The precondition for veteran status is that the vehicle’s first entry into circulation was at least 30 years ago. Only then can the cantonal road traffic office, after a successful inspection, make the entry “veteran vehicle” in the registration document.
- Inspection interval: can be extended to six years for veteran vehicles (and their trailers).
- Vehicle taxes: capped at a maximum of CHF 400 per year; veteran trailers are exempt.
- Exemption from the heavy vehicle charge as well as from the obligation to carry a tachograph and an LSVA recording device.
The 30-year limit refers to the first entry into circulation — not to a later Swiss re-registration.
