Is a veteran vehicle roadworthy?

Last verified: 2026-06-20

Veteran status is granted at a vehicle inspection and recorded as the entry “veteran vehicle” in the registration document. The vehicle thereby remains authorised for traffic — it is therefore roadworthy, but subject to special conditions.

  • No regular use; the annual mileage is limited (guideline value around 2,000–3,000 km, i.e. about 50–60 operating hours).
  • The vehicle must correspond to its original condition; modifications must date from the vehicle’s era.
  • Visually and technically flawless, above-average maintained condition.
  • Private use only — no paid rides offered to the public.

The conditions are governed by the ASTRA directive on veteran vehicles; the inspection and the document entry are carried out by the cantonal road traffic office.
