The Swiss vehicle observatory
What the official BEST/IVZ registration data reveals about the vehicles on Swiss roads — the active civilian fleet, broken down by fuel, canton, year of first registration and colour. Every view counts each vehicle exactly once.

- Year of first registration is not the model year: a vehicle registered in 2019 may be a 2018 model.
- The current year is incomplete and therefore lower.
- Some vehicles have no year of first registration recorded; they appear as “No year recorded” and are included in the total — they do not count towards “before 2000”.
- Years before 2000 are combined into a single bar (the thin, old tail).

About these numbers
- Civilian fleet only (status “in circulation”, normal plates) — military, dealer and special plates are excluded.
- Each vehicle is counted exactly once — there is no double counting across type approvals or eCoC records.
- The basis is the official ASTRA BEST/IVZ registration data; the snapshot date is shown as “as of” on each view.
This data may be used freely — for example by media, dealers, fleet operators, researchers and public administration. Please cite the source (BEST/IVZ, ASTRA) and the snapshot date.
