May you use a foreign vehicle temporarily in Switzerland (temporary admission)?
Last verified: 2026-06-20
Anyone resident in Switzerland may in principle not use an uncleared foreign vehicle domestically. A customs declaration for temporary admission (ZAVV) nonetheless allows time-limited use.
- The temporary admission procedure is in principle limited to two years and can be extended at most three times by one year each.
- With a temporary admission for twelve cross-border journeys, one may enter Switzerland twelve times per year, for a maximum of three days each time.
- Persons resident abroad may use their vehicle registered abroad temporarily in Switzerland without customs clearance.
Permanent use of an uncleared foreign vehicle by a person resident in Switzerland, without temporary admission, is unlawful and can lead to back-claims and fines.
