How do you export a vehicle from Switzerland?
Last verified: 2026-06-20
When a vehicle is definitively taken abroad, an export customs declaration must be drawn up at the BAZG. Export from Switzerland is exempt from Swiss VAT; any import duties are due in the country of destination.
If the vehicle is to be exported under its own power, the cantonal road traffic office issues time-limited export plates together with a provisional registration document. The current Swiss licence plate must be returned, respectively the registration document cancelled.
Export plates are valid only for a limited time and are intended exclusively for export.
