How is a self-built vehicle registered?

Last verified: 2026-06-20

Self-built vehicles do not undergo a series type approval, but an individual vehicle registration. Where — as with a self-build — no approval documents under Art. 30 VTS are available, an identification check and a functional check are carried out by the admission authority under Art. 30a VTS.

The vehicle must meet all the construction and equipment requirements of the VTS (brakes, lighting, exhaust and noise rules, chassis, etc.). The rules in force at the time of the first entry into circulation are decisive. For complex self-builds, prior clarification with the road traffic office, respectively ASTRA, is recommended.

Self-builds are generally subject to a thorough technical individual inspection; depending on the scope, strength, braking and exhaust proofs must be provided.
