How are kit cars and replicas registered?
Last verified: 2026-06-20
Vehicles assembled from kits (kit cars) and reproductions of historic models (replicas) undergo, like self-builds, an individual vehicle registration under Art. 30/30a VTS — with identification and functional check, since no approval documents are available.
Inspection is against the technical requirements of the VTS (including brakes, lighting, exhaust and noise). A replica does not automatically receive the status or the historic reliefs of the reproduced original; veteran status requires the vehicle itself to meet the 30-year criteria.
Because of the considerable inspection effort, early clarification with the road traffic office is recommended; strength and exhaust proofs may be required.
