What applies to accident-damaged and rebuilt vehicles?

Last verified: 2026-06-20

Under Art. 34 para. 1 VTS, the police report to the admission authority vehicles that have suffered severe damage in accidents or showed significant defects at checks; these must be re-inspected. The re-inspection takes place in the canton of location.

Where a vehicle is fundamentally modified, the authority assesses it under currently applicable law. Modifications regarded as fundamental include in particular those that change the concept of the vehicle (e.g. the replacement of entire bodies), as well as modifications that impair road safety.

After a severe accident or an extensive rebuild, the vehicle is authorised for traffic again only after passing a re-inspection; depending on the extent of the intervention, current rather than original rules then apply.
