What is a day permit (day plate)?
Last verified: 2026-06-20
With a day permit and the associated day plates, a vehicle that bears no licence plate of its own can be made authorised for traffic and covered by liability insurance for a particular day. Typical cases are transfer, inspection or sales drives.
The issuance of day permits and collective vehicle registration documents, as well as the associated licence plates, is governed by the Traffic Insurance Ordinance (VVV, Art. 20–26); Art. 71 VZV refers to it. Day permits are issued by the cantonal road traffic office.
The day permit is valid only on the entered day; it must always be carried in the original.
