What is a dealer plate (U plate)?
Last verified: 2026-06-20
Dealer plates are special licence plates for motor-trade businesses (sales, repair, bodywork). They are issued via a collective vehicle registration document and are not assigned to a single vehicle, but may be used for various company-owned or entrusted vehicles.
Under Art. 82 VZV, dealer plates are specially marked with the letter “U”. The permitted uses (e.g. test, transfer, workshop and demonstration drives) are governed by the Traffic Insurance Ordinance (VVV).
Dealer plates are subject to strict rules of use — permanent private use or commercial passenger transport is not permitted.
