What happens if a vehicle fails the MFK?

Last verified: 2026-06-20

If a vehicle does not meet the minimum safety requirements, it is rejected at the inspection. A rejection means that the vehicle is not in safe operating condition and the defect must be remedied.

After remedy, the vehicle must be presented for a follow-up inspection within the set deadline. Around 14 working days is usual; deadlines can differ by canton (sometimes up to about three weeks, i.e. 30 days).

In the case of serious defects that directly endanger road safety, further driving can be prohibited immediately (see “Defects with immediate withdrawal”).
