What is a follow-up inspection after the vehicle inspection?
Last verified: 2026-06-20
If a vehicle was rejected at the official inspection, the defects must be remedied and the vehicle re-presented for the follow-up inspection. Only once the follow-up inspection is passed does the vehicle count again as inspected and in safe operating condition.
The deadline is usually around 14 working days; it is governed cantonally and can vary. In some cantons, for minor defects, a written confirmation of the remedy (e.g. by a garage) suffices, instead of physically re-presenting the vehicle.
If the follow-up inspection is not carried out on time, the road traffic office can take further measures — up to withdrawal of the registration document and plates.
