How do you import a used car from the EU?
Last verified: 2026-06-20
When importing a used car from the EU, the vehicle is first cleared through customs. The automobile tax of 4% and the import VAT of 8.1% apply. The actual customs duty is waived when EU origin is established with a valid proof of origin (Switzerland–EU free trade agreement). The BAZG issues the assessment certificate (form 13.20 A).
Since EU vehicles usually have an EU type approval, technical recognition can take place via the existing documents, respectively the electronic data sheet. Registration then takes place at the cantonal road traffic office.
VAT is levied, even for used vehicles, on the import value (purchase price including transport and import duties) — regardless of the fact that it is a used vehicle.
