Which vehicle data are public and which are protected?
Last verified: 2026-06-20
ASTRA vehicle data draw a clear line between publicly accessible and protected information.
- Public (open data): technical type approval data; anonymised new registrations and vehicle stock including canton.
- Protected: name and address of the keeper, full postal code, chassis number (VIN) and the “special use” field.
The “special use” field (e.g. veteran, driving-school, police, ambulance or fire-service vehicle) is contained only in the paid “_R” products. Keeper details and full address data are not freely published, for data-protection reasons.
Because “special use” is not freely available, veteran vehicles, for example, cannot be uniquely identified in the free data — at most age (first entry into circulation more than 30 years ago) serves as an approximation.
