What is the IVZ and what was MOFIS?

ASTRA operates the central “Vehicle Admission Information System” (IVZ) with the registers Persons, Vehicles, Measures and Analyses. The IVZ is a relational database with around 21 million vehicle records and 12 million person records and is used by over 2,500 users (including the cantonal road traffic offices and the Road Traffic Office of the Principality of Liechtenstein) with around 3 million transactions per day.
The IVZ consolidated several previously separate federal systems that had been in use for over 30 years: MOFIS (motor vehicle information system, vehicle and keeper data), FABER (driving authorisation register) and ADMAS (administrative measures). The Federal Council brought the legal bases of the IVZ into force at the end of 2018.
The publicly published ASTRA vehicle data (new registrations, stock, type approvals) come from the Vehicles register of the IVZ — in anonymised or pseudonymised form.
