What is the difference between direct import and buying from the official importer?
Last verified: 2026-06-20
ASTRA statistics distinguish new registrations by import channel: official import (via the make’s general importer), parallel import and direct import. Legally, all these routes are permitted.
- Official importer: Swiss-market version, importer’s / manufacturer’s warranty and a nationwide service network; customs clearance and type approval are organised.
- Direct / parallel import: often cheaper purchase abroad, but customs clearance, technical recognition (an individual inspection where applicable) and any adaptations must be organised yourself; warranty and recall handling can differ.
In both cases the same import duties apply (automobile tax 4%, VAT 8.1%, customs duty where applicable). The difference lies in the effort, the equipment / specification and the extent of service and warranty.
