What is the certificate of conformity (CoC / eCoC)?

Last verified: 2026-06-20

The CoC (Certificate of Conformity) accompanies every individual vehicle built under an EU type approval and certifies its conformity with the approved type. The legal basis is Art. 36 of Regulation (EU) 2018/858: “The manufacturer shall issue a certificate of conformity for each vehicle …”.

The eCoC is the structured electronic successor to the paper CoC. In Switzerland, vehicles with an (e)CoC are registered via an “Initial Vehicle Information” (IVI); the electronic data sheet portal provides the vehicle-specific data (since December 2021). Field 24 of the registration document then shows “IVI” or “IVIX” instead of a Swiss type approval number.

Digital vehicle registration – adjustment of national rules (Switzerland): per ASTRA (As of: 2026-01-01)

eCoC mandatory for new registrations EU-wide: per ASTRA (As of: 2026-07-05)

Over 80 % of vehicles registered in Switzerland are based on EU type approvals — the (e)CoC is therefore of central importance for the Swiss market. The dates given are based on the ASTRA page “Digital vehicle registration”.
