What is the emission code (exhaust code) in the registration document?
Last verified: 2026-06-20
In the ASTRA vehicle data and in the registration document, the emission code designates a vehicle’s emission category. It appears in field 72 of the registration document and serves as the key for assigning it to the emission standard met (e.g. a Euro stage).
In the structured type approval data (TARGA), the emission code is kept together with the measured pollutant values — for example in the auxiliary file “emissionen”, with values for CO, HC, NOx, HC+NOx and particulates (PM), and, for bi-fuel vehicles, additionally for the second fuel.
The emission code is an encoding — the actual emission standard (Euro 5/6 etc.) follows from the stored code table.
