How is a motorhome classified?
Last verified: 2026-06-20
Under Art. 11 VTS, vehicles whose interior (including the driver’s and luggage compartment) is fitted out as living space and for the carriage of persons, with up to nine seats, are “motor caravans”; they are treated as equivalent to passenger transport motor vehicles.
In the registration document, motor caravans are simply designated as light or heavy motor vehicles and described by their designated purpose. Whether a motorhome counts as light or heavy depends on the guaranteed weight.
Once a motorhome exceeds 3.5 t total weight, it counts as a heavy motor vehicle — with consequences for the required driving licence category and individual traffic rules.
