What does the Euro NCAP rating mean?

Last verified: 2026-06-20

Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) tests new vehicles independently and awards an overall rating of 0 to 5 stars. Five stars stand for overall excellent performance in occupant protection and modern crash-avoidance technology; 0 stars means that a vehicle does meet the statutory minimum requirements and may be sold, but offers little modern safety technology.

From 2026, Euro NCAP structures its assessment into four areas: “Safe Driving” (driver assistance), “Crash Avoidance” (accident avoidance), “Crash Protection” (occupant and partner protection) and “Post-Crash Safety” (rescue after the crash).

The star rating is consumer information — it is not a Swiss admission requirement. A vehicle can be lawfully registered even with few stars.
